This course is for parents and teachers in any educational setting who want to bring Painting to first graders. The course is composed of 36 painting lessons that take you from start to finish for each of the 36 paintings. In addition, there are primer lessons to help you understand the materials and techniques used in first grade painting. There are also lessons for how to look back at and review the paintings you have completed with your student(s) so that they will feel good about their creative process and so that they continue to develop positive self-esteem.  LEARN MORE

Flute/Recorder Level 1

The course takes the student, step by step, through the process of developing skills, one hand at a time, gradually unifying the process so that both hands can play songs on the flute. We learn the simple techniques and songs in the course by heart and ear. We do not complicate this process with written music. The important first steps are to develop comfort and skills with the instrument itself. We do this by learning simple songs that are easily mastered with daily practice. Clay Modeling Level 1

The course takes the student, step by step, through the process of developing skills and dexterity for modeling with clay. The projects start very simply and continue building upon the previously practiced skills for the completion of more complex projects. These lessons are also designed to allow for flexibility. For example, a child might struggle with the diamondback pattern on a rattlesnake. If so, the project can be simplified to just modeling the shape of the snake with the rattler tail, leaving out the patterning. Block Crayon Drawing Level 1

This course is anyone who wants to learn about the unique and wonderful artistic medium known as block crayons. Because of their shapes, the block crayons apply color in wider bands, much more like a paintbrush than a stick crayon or colored pencil. This allows for blending of colors and shading--both of which allow for vibrant, rich, and beautiful visual effects. In addition, the block crayons apply color quickly, much more quickly than a tradition stick crayon. So, the beautiful drawings in this course can be created relatively quickly. The 36 start-to-finish lessons take the student through 36 drawings, and the lessons average somewhere around 15 minutes each. This course is a great primer for students who might want to later venture into pastel, colored-pencil, or charcoal drawing. This is a beginning level singing course. The course is composed of 36 lessons. Each lesson takes you from start to finish with a single, new simple song. The themes are simple, often inspired by nature, but also ranging from bedtime songs, mealtime blessings, and even bubble baths! Young children will especially enjoy them! LEARN MORE

Rev Bowen Simply Waldorf

Hi, I’m Rev Bowen

“Rev Bowen, M.A. (Human Development)

After graduating with a BA in English (1996), Rev completed his Waldorf Grades Teacher training at the Rudolf Steiner College in 2000. He taught as a grades teacher for 18 years, taking two classes from first to eighth grades and one class for seventh and eighth grades. During those early teaching years, he completed his M.A. in Human Development through St. Mary’s University (2004). From 2018 - 2020, Rev served as the Pedagogical Director of the school’s College of Teachers and then spent the 2020-2021 school year as the School Administrator. He currently continues to teach several subject classes while developing courses for Simply Waldorf.

Along with having taught all of the main lesson courses in grades one through eight, Rev has taught many subject classes such as: handwork, woodwork, sculpting and modeling, painting, drawing, form drawing, perspective drawing, recorder and flute, hand bells, percussion, choir, drama, and games and movement.

During the last 22 years, Rev has been a keynote speaker, presenter, and teacher for various conferences and trainings, with these events being offered to Waldorf teachers, charter school teachers, public school teachers, and parent-educators. He has observed, evaluated, and mentored many teachers during that time as well.

While Rev has never taught a homeschool curriculum to students, he has been involved in consultations and conversations with homeschooling families for the last few years and he has designed other courses, prior to Simply Waldorf, for homeschooling parent-educators. Another interesting note is that Rev had one of his children in his elementary class for eight years, which has helped him to relate to parent-educators who discover the rewards and challenges that come with trying to balance the roles of parent and teacher for the same child or children.

It was during the recent years, while developing the homeschooling resource courses, that Rev realized how important and needed such courses were for those families who courageously choose to homeschool their children. Those conversations and experiences serve as the inspiration for creating Simply Waldorf and more resource courses for parent-educators.”
